Zaven Rock-and-roll interview Series: Jon Bartman, CEO of Law Tech Consultancy

Q: How fast do you see AI evolving in the legal sector?

Jon: “The technology is advancing at breakneck speed, but legal teams don’t always keep up. There’s this gap between the tech moving a thousand miles an hour and legal teams catching up. But change is happening, and we’re seeing more and more AI solutions, each addressing specific needs in the legal space. I hope the pace of adoption speeds up—there’s so much potential here, and the sooner legal teams jump on board, the better.”

Q: What mindset do in-house and private practice lawyers need to embrace AI?

Jon: “It boils down to being open-minded and willing to try. A lot of the tech solutions out there were created by lawyers who saw a problem and decided to fix it. They didn’t accept the status quo. Lawyers often start from a place of skepticism, but adopting tech means flipping that script to ‘I want this to work.’ The mindset shift from risk aversion to embracing potential is key. It’s not about wondering if something will work; it’s about making it work.”

Q: How do you see the market evolving, specifically in the crowded CLM (Contract Lifecycle Management) space?

Jon: “CLM is one of the hottest areas right now. Every in-house team needs to know what’s in their contracts and manage them effectively. We’re already seeing consolidation in the market—big players like Eversource and iCertis, and recent mergers like Agiloft’s. But despite all the competition, there’s still a lot of opportunity here. The market isn’t saturated yet; there are plenty of companies that haven’t made a choice on a CLM solution, so there’s still a long way to go.”
