Zaven Rock-and-roll interview Series: Natali Petras, Former CEO and Co-Founder of Tenant Hero

When do you feel with your clients that “we are the champions”?

Natali:  ’So we operate a B2C service and our goal really is to increase access to justice and promote legal health. So we feel like the champions when the clients can navigate contracts on their own and they don’t need somebody to hold their hand.

When they have an essential grasp of their legal obligations and their legal knowledge. This can come in very small steps of just telling them this is what’s wrong and this is what’s right and here’s what you can do about it. And that way we instill agency in people and we’re able to let people who otherwise would not have access to legal help fight for their rights and get their rights enforced.’

What does it take to see a tech revolution in the industry?

Natali: “ I definitely believe in magic. I think the key for the tech revolution in this industry is to address more of the unseen problems and use tech for what it’s really powerful for.

What does tech do? It decreases the costs, it makes processes more efficient. Who can use these processes and this tech the most? Who can benefit from them the most? Not only the B2B solution. So you have to also look at the smaller players, look at B2C, also look at B2B, but look at SMEs, look at startups, look at where your tech can have the biggest impact, and where these cost reductions have the biggest societal impact on a whole as well.”

Where do you see the winners emerging in the legal tech industry, and for what reasons?

Natalie:  ”I think to be a winner in the legal tech industry you definitely have to take an interdisciplinary perspective. You need to learn all the technological backing of what you are using.

What is the tech you’re applying and what is the tech that’s being regulated. You cannot just look at it from a lawyer’s perspective. You have to be at the same time be a product manager, a designer, a software engineer. And these might not all be in the same person, but you have to focus on building a team around it that has the right expertise to leverage this, and that also has an interest.

People that don’t have an interest in legal tech or legal solutions are not going to be the right people for your team. So I think you need to find that inherent passion in people and to work towards a common goal.”
